Home network and Wi-Fi setup

Modem and router set up properly, Wi-Fi that reaches the rooms you actually use, and every device in the house connected to it. Out here, that last part is rarely as simple as it sounds.
What we sort out

Wi-Fi that works in the whole house.

Most homes have one router in one corner doing its best. Whether that is enough depends entirely on the building, and older houses out here are hard on a wireless signal.
✓ A new modem or router that needs setting up
✓ Rooms with no signal or a constant drop
✓ Wi-Fi that slows to a crawl in the evening
✓ Devices that keep disconnecting
✓ Nobody knows the Wi-Fi password any more
✓ A home office that needs to be reliable
The usual culprits

Why the signal dies where it does.

Buying a more powerful router is the usual first instinct and often the wrong one. These four causes are far more common, and only one of them is fixed by new hardware.
01

Where the router is

Routers get installed wherever the cable comes into the house, which is usually a corner, often a basement, and almost never the middle. Moving it, or extending from it, fixes more dead spots than replacing it does.
02

What the house is made of

Plaster with metal lath, brick chimneys, foil-backed insulation and anything with water in it all absorb a wireless signal. Two houses the same size can need completely different answers.
03

The two bands

Modern Wi-Fi runs on two frequencies: one fast over short distances, one slower but far better through walls. Devices do not always pick sensibly, which is why a phone can show full bars and still load nothing.
04

The line coming in

Sometimes the Wi-Fi is fine and the internet service itself is the problem. Worth establishing before anyone spends money on equipment, and we can tell you which of the two you are dealing with.
How it works

This one has to be done at the house.

A network problem is a building problem as much as a hardware one, so it cannot be diagnosed from anywhere else.
01

We walk the house

Measuring signal in the rooms you actually use, rather than guessing from the router.
02

We set it up properly

Modem and router configured, bands sorted, a password you can actually give people, and the network secured.
03

We connect everything

Computers, phones, tablets, TVs, printers and smart home devices — all back on and working before we leave.
What it costs

Quoted before we start.

Nothing is done and nothing is charged until you have seen the price and agreed to it.

A flat $19.99 call-out fee covers the trip, the same anywhere in our service area. It is held on a card before we travel rather than charged: if the work goes ahead it comes off the price, so you pay the service price and nothing more. If no work goes ahead, the $19.99 is all you pay.

Network setup and configuration starts at $149. That covers the modem and router set up properly and every device in the house connected to it.

Parts, licenses, and third-party services are priced separately when applicable — if the house needs extra hardware to cover it, that is quoted before anything is bought.

No fix, no fee.

If we cannot get your network working properly, you do not pay for the attempt.
Straight answers

A better router will not fix a slow line.

Out here, the speed reaching the house is often the real limit, and no amount of equipment inside changes what is coming down the line. If that is your situation we will tell you, and we will not sell you a mesh system to fix a problem it cannot fix.

The reverse is also true. Plenty of homes have a perfectly good connection and a network that cannot carry it to the far end of the house. That one we can fix, and it is usually cheaper than people expect.
